Wilton Police arrested Jolene Matthews, 41, of Monroe in Orange County, after receiving a call from the Goddard School for a report of an intoxicated parent attempting to pick-up their 4-year-old child, said Lt. Robert Kluk.
According to Kluk, after workers would not release the child to Matthews she left the area driving south on Kristine Lilly Way in a black VW Jetta. Officers attempted to stop her, but she continued driving before coming to a stop in traffic at the intersection of School and Danbury roads, he said.
Other responding officers were able to box in her vehicle to prevent her from leaving. When officers approached the car, Matthews refused to get out, he said.
Officers had to break the window and reach inside to turn the vehicle off to be able to remove her from the vehicle, Kluk reported.
Once outside the vehicle, officers could smell a heavy odor of alcohol and she appeared drunk, police said.
A search of her vehicle turned up a coffee cup containing wine, Kluk said.
Matthews was transported to the Wilton Police Department were she refused to submit to any testing.
She was charged with DUI, interfering, operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to wear a seatbelt. She was held on $500 bond which was later reduced by the State Bail Commission to a promise to appear notice.
Matthews is scheduled to appear in court on June 25.
